I've been thinking a lot lately about how libraries have changed so much from a silent, peaceful place of individual learning to a bustling, sometimes noisy, social place. This change is probably due to the change in how we access, sort through and synthesize information. Society is changing quickly to keep up with information overload. Social networking is a key part of functioning in the world today. Large corporations, small companies, universities and individuals all use it as a tool for marketing, developing ideas and socializing. MySpace, Facebook and YouTube are here to stay so we need to learn to use them responsibly.

As a library media specialist, teaching information literacy is my job. I think I may need to let students use MySpace, Facebook, YouTube and whatever else comes up here in the library where they can learn how to be responsible users. Maybe the library should be more like a combination of Barnes and Noble and an internet cafe? Should I open a coffee shop in the library?
